Have you ever spotted these tiny pink-coloured fruits in your local market and wondered what they are? Karonda – also called black currant and scientifically named as carissa carandas – is a traditional summer produce in India and belongs to the berry family. They are often confused with cranberries because of their shape and size. Karondas may not be used on a regular basis but are commonly used for making pickles, jams and preserves – a popular one being – karonde ka achaar.
